School Notes:
- St. George's School is a selective and rigorous co-educational boarding school for students in grades 9-12. Students challenge themselves through a program that combines demanding academics with a rich array of athletic and extracurricular opportunities. The private school's 200-acre campus, overlooking Newport and the Atlantic Ocean, offers remarkable physical resources, including a performing arts center, a science center and observatory, dual indoor hockey rinks and new basketball, track, softball, squash and baseball facilities.
- The St. George’s Summer Session is an academic enrichment program for 13 –18 year old boys and girls.
- The Summer Session curriculum is rich and varied. Each student is required to take three courses during the Summer Session. Courses are designed for students with a wide variety of needs and interests. Some students will enjoy review of material just covered in school while others will select the challenge of AP level courses. Still more will appreciate the introduction to English as a Second Language and the subsequent introduction to American culture.
- Athletics are an important part of the St. George’s Summer Session. Every student participates in instructional level athletics four times a week. Students may change their athletic choices during the summer to try different sports. The daily schedule, although fairly hectic, offers students a good balance of academic, athletic and leisure time. The mornings are the busiest; students are focused on academics, studying hard and challenging one another with questions. After lunch, students shift gears, giving their minds a rest and their bodies some exercise.
- St. George’s offers a wonderful setting for outdoor activities, and athletics are an integral part of the summer session experience. We offer an array of sports that allow students to exercise in an atmosphere that is both competitive and fun. While each sport is directed by a qualified coach, the spirit of the program is recreational and not instructional. Every student must take part in at least one organized athletic activity for an hour four days a week, and students have the opportunity to play two different sports during their stay at St. George’s. Since the school offers field trips and excursions on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, sports are not held on those days.
