School Notes:
- Seacamp is a non-profit, marine science education facility located on Big Pine Key in the tropical Florida Keys adjacent to Looe Key and Florida's fragile coral reefs. Founded in 1966, Seacamp offers marine science education and summer camp experiences including SCUBA, sailing, board sailing, and arts & crafts to students from 12-17 years of age.
- With its beautiful location at Newfound Harbor on Big Pine Key, SEACAMP offers teenage boys and girls an opportunity to explore some of the most exciting waters in the Florida Keys, both in the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. They will move among coral reefs, sandy and grassy areas, mud flats and natural tide pools, all of them rich in sea plants and animals basic to the study of marine science. Camp facilities include a dining and recreation hall, science laboratory, deep water harbor, arts and crafts building, infirmary, sailing shelter, teaching shelter, commercial kitchen, business office, staff lounge, and administration offices.
- Campers and staff are housed in four dormitories, 16 cabins have tiled baths, nine have an adjacent showerhouse. Overall, there is one staff member for every three resident campers. This close relationship makes it possible to encourage individuality and provide for small group instruction.
- In the past thirty years Seacamp Association has developed and continuously refined an educational program which offers a range of subjects, a high degree of student participation, and an intense experience that is both action-packed and safe. We've seen the enormous impact that field observation and research has on students, demonstrating, as no classroom lecture can, the connections between living things on land and in the ocean and the complexity of the ecological, social, cultural, and economic issues facing the world's citizens.
