School Notes:

  • Betsey Cox and Sangamon share a common boundary and a common belief in children and the self-structured program. Since its founding in 1953, Camp Betsey Cox has been a leader in girls' camping. It continues in that role, offering young women the opportunity to develop self-confidence, initiative, and leadership in a single-gender setting. The brother-sister relationship between the camps emphasizes active friendship rather than social life. The two directors, Lorrie and Mike Byrom, are spouses and partners. Their camps share senior staff and philosophies, but operate autonomously.
  • Betsey Cox is a camp for young women growing up in the global world of the twenty-first century. Betsey Cox couples traditional camping with a commitment to programs which develop skills necessary for girls who hope to make a difference in the future. Like the camp's namesake, a girl who grew up in pre-Revolutionary Pittsford, our campers develop the self-confidence to take risks and to manage their lives.
  • Each girl creates her own schedule each day; well-trained staff offer guidance when needed. Except for required swimming lessons, the program is fully elective. Campers take responsibility for their own lives in ways which they may never have experienced before. Each girl contributes to the work in the community by taking turns with all-camp jobs in the cabin, dining hall, and the garden.
