School Notes:

  • Clearwater is a private, residential camp for approximately 120 girls between the ages of eight and sixteen. Founded in 1933 by Sara Holiday (Halokwe) Sprague, Clearwater has been under the direction of Sunny Moore, once a Clearwater camper and counselor herself, for more than 20 years. Laurie Smith, a former camper and counselor, is Co-Director of the Camp and helps oversee the day-to-day running of all Camp activities.
  • The activity program at Clearwater is designed to allow for the growth of the camper not only at the activity level but also in the camper's relationships with others and herself. Weeks in camp are a time to explore, to develop new hobbies, to have fun, and also to learn the satisfying use of non-scheduled time.
  • The formal part of the program includes 18 hours of instruction per week in the regular activities: Archery, Arts & Crafts, Campcraft, Canoeing and Canoe trips, Ceramics, Drama, Fishing, Kayaking, Mountain biking, Music, Nature Lore, Outdoor cooking, Photography, English Riding, Sailing, Sailboarding, Swimming, Tennis, Tumbling, Waterskiing, Windsurfing.
  • Each week, every girl receives a new schedule of activities. Her program is built around her activity preferences, her parents' requests, and the best use of staff and equipment. Each activity is governed by safety rules and procedures, which are designed for the safety of the campers and the proper learning of the activity.
  • A Clearwater camper is a special person, one whose parents recognize the value of an extended experience away from home. Realizing this, Clearwater Camp is dedicated to providing that environment which will stimulate the most healthful and purposeful growth towards maturity. It is a place where a camper may learn to interact with her peers, to develop new skills, to venture into the unknown and to succeed in her pursuit of new goals. Considerable effort goes into structuring the program to insure the proper balance between scheduled activity instruction and the free use of time to enjoy the beauty of the Northwoods with new friends.
